About the Shiba Inu Breed

The Shiba Inu breed is a charming breed with a rich history that traces back to Japan, where they were originally bred for hunting small game. This small yet confident dog has captured the hearts of many with their spirited personality and fox-like appearance. Known for their independent nature, Shiba Inus require an owner who appreciates their unique blend of affection and autonomy. While they can be somewhat reserved around kids and other pets, they often form strong bonds with their families and are sure to fill your home with joy.

Shiba Inu Temperament and Care

With a moderate energy level, Shiba Inus enjoy daily walks and playtime, making them well-suited for apartment living. They thrive in stable environments where they can engage in regular exercise but do not require extensive physical activity. Grooming is quite manageable since they shed minimally, needing only weekly brushing to keep their coat healthy and beautiful. Though they may not be the most trainable breed, Shiba Inus are intelligent and can learn commands and tricks, especially with patience and positive reinforcement.

Their low barking tendency means you can enjoy a peaceful home atmosphere, even when entertaining guests. If you're considering a Shiba Inu, you'll find a loyal companion that brings a delightful mix of independence and charm into your life. Many families in XO PUPS have discovered the joy of welcoming a Shiba Inu into their hearts and homes, finding a balance between spirited play and peaceful companionship. Prepare for a rewarding adventure alongside this unique breed and cherish the special moments you will create together.

No. Because of their strong prey drive and independent nature, Shiba Inus are not reliable off-leash. A fenced area or secure lead is essential to keep them safe during outdoor activities.
They can, but they tend to be selective with other dogs and may prefer to be the only dog in the household. Early socialization and careful introductions help them coexist peacefully with other pets.
Shiba Inus are intelligent but strong-willed, which can make training a challenge. Consistent, positive reinforcement and patience are key to building good habits.

My husband and I came in to visit to look at the puppies and options they have. They gave us a good amount of time to get to know a puppy, but we had another puppy in mind too. They did a great job with handling customers. The staff quickly wanted to know the purpose and how serious we were on buying before they gave out a second puppy, which I understand. However, we were interested but this also turned us off. The puppies were individually confined which is not great environmentally and socially for them. (My opinion, but to each their own.) Otherwise, it was not bad of an experience. I will come back. Just things to consider. We will keep them in mind for a specific breed only.

We had a great experience at XO with our first dog so it was a no-brainer to return when we were looking to add another puppy to our family. We had an equally great experience the second time around, and happy to find another perfect match.
